Undergraduate Admissions Policies
The University of Fort Lauderdale is committed to an admissions process that considers the whole person, to include the student’s former education, community service, leadership experiences, references, personal interests and goals. The University is an equal access and opportunity institution of higher education and adheres to a non-discriminatory policy.
Students interested in attending the University should contact the Office of Admissions for information. Students are encouraged to set appointments with the Office of Admissions, where a representative will assist them in completing the necessary paperwork.
Students who have officially matriculated into a College within the University may graduate and qualify to receive a degree upon meeting the listed requirements:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Complete the required courses mandated by the designated degree program and earn the total credits as stated by the College.
- Earn the last 30 semester upper-division credits in residence at the University.
- Complete all general education and major requirements for the degree.
- Remove all incomplete grades by the published deadlines.
- Complete all directed study, research, or independent study credits by the published deadlines in the course syllabus.
- File an application for graduation by the published deadline.
- Meet all financial obligations.
Classification of Students
Academic standing is computed by dividing the total number of quality points by the total hours attempted by a student. Continuance and promotion from one academic classification to another are based on the completion of the following number of credit hours:
0 – 30
31 – 60
61 – 90
90 – 120
Full Term Status
Students may apply for full-time, part-time or per diem study. The minimum academic load for a full-time student is 12 semester credit hours or at least 96 hours of remedial study in a semester. The maximum load is 18 hours; additional courses beyond 16 hours require the approval of the Dean. The approval shall be dependent upon the superior academic achievement of the student. Other than by special permission, first-year students are limited to 16 credit hours. The course load for a student on academic probation is 12 credit hours. Part-time study allows a student to take up to 9 credits or 48 hours of remedial study in a semester. Per Diem study is available for students who are auditing classes, non-degree seeking and/or taking 6 credits or less within an academic year.
- Official transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2.0 GPA.
- Government I.D.
- One reference. (Requirement for Ministry Degree Tracks only)
- SAT/ACT scores or successful completion of University of Fort Lauderdale’s entrance examination.
Higher Education Opportunity and Advancement Program (HEOAP)
HEOAP is an academic skill enhancement program to prepare the student for college course work. HEOAP courses are 100 level courses and are open to any student in the category of English as a second language, high school seniors with a GPA below 2.0, incoming students with a below average SAT or ACT score, adults returning to school and adults actively completing the GED requirements. HEOAP comprises a five-year degree program for a bachelor’s degree. Students must attend various non-credit courses in the first year of study to build skills, confidence, and achieve eligibility for matriculation. HEOAP is open to students, who require pre-college skills in math and English. Faculty advisors may make recommendations to students concerning remedial courses at any time. Students have the responsibility to follow the recommendations in order to avoid academic failure. The University administers an examination to determine a student’s readiness to take credit courses at the level of 101 or greater. A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required to take 101 level courses or higher.
International students are considered for admission as first year and transfer students. Applicants with a native language other than English are required to take an English as a second language course.
Transfer students must meet all admission requirements and follow the admission procedures of the University.
1. Transferring students who have fewer than 24 credits at the college level must have official transcripts from their high school sent to UFTL
2. Transfer students must present test scores, complete entrance exam or submit transferable credits in English and Mathematics courses that satisfy the General Education requirements.
3. Transferring students who are not in good academic standing (on suspension or dismissal) must see an Academic Advisor before applying for admission.
4. Official transcripts from all institutions attended must be sent to the Office of Admissions. Courses in which the student ends with a grade less than a “C” are not transferable.
5. Documentation such as catalogs, course descriptions, course syllabi, and faculty letters of support may be required to evaluate courses taken at other colleges or universities.
6. Upon admission to the University, course credits may be evaluated for transfer. Courses accepted for transfer must be equivalent to those required in the degree plan. The Admissions Committee will evaluate transfer credits.
7. The grade point average earned from another institution will not be transferred into the University.
8. Students who hold an associate degree from an accredited institution may receive credits towards a junior standing.
